Near the centre of the island lies the town of
Kalloni and it's beach village, Skala Kalloni.
Kalloni is a good place to go shopping, with some
very nice shops in the centre. You can buy books about Lesvos from the
Eirmos bookshop, there are a couple of good shops that sell CDs and plenty
of good jewelers.
Skala Kalloni is a busy tourist resort and can feel
a bit crowded in the summer, but the beach is quite pleasant. There is an
old bakery in the centre of the village, where they still use a wood fired
oven. This is reputed to be one of the best bakeries on the island.
The sardines from the gulf of Kalloni are famous
throughout Greece, as I can testify from a conversation with an Athens
taxi driver. They are really wonderful to eat with a glass or two of local
ouzo.
In the winter and early spring, you can often see
flamingoes in the shallows around the gulf of Kalloni. This area is
generally a very popular area with bird watchers in the spring.
